In Early Stage of Baldness, Is Only PRP/Minoxidil Enough or Both Needed?

This is a common confusion that many hair transplant patients share: In the early stage of baldness, can we just use non surgical treatment? Or is only the Minoxidil application would solve the problem? Or should we use both simultaneously for the best results?

In this educational video, Dr John Watts – a noted dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad – demystifies this confusion for the benefit of the viewers of his popular YouTube channel. He has successfully performed over 1900+ hair transplant procedures so far.

Introduction:

In general, the use of non surgical treatment therapy is regarded as efficacious for hair growth during the early stage of baldness. This technique is implemented by separating the growth factor from one’s blood.

The blood is processed by obtaining 15-20 ml of blood and once the growth factor is collected, it is injected into the scalp. This procedure leads to hair growth and increases hair density.

Similarly, Minoxidil solution, which is US FDA approved, is known to show good results when it is applied in the region facing hair thinning. It works by increasing the blood supply to the region besides promoting hair growth and increasing hair density.

However, the million-dollar question is whether one should only use non surgical treatment or Minoxidil or use both simultaneously for best results?

“This question was answered in the form of a study conducted on three groups of hair loss patients facing an early stage of baldness in the age group of 18-58 years,” explained Dr John Watts.

Research Study: Procedure & Findings

For this research study, the researchers formed three groups of hair loss patients facing an early stage of baldness in the age group of 18-58 years. In the first group, they allowed the use of only non surgical treatment therapy for four months.

While in the second group, they allowed the use of only Minoxidil solution for four months and in the third group, they allowed the participants to use both non surgical treatment and Minoxidil application simultaneously for four months.

Research Study: Results

The results were shocking when the three groups were compared after four months of the study. The results were evaluated based on hair density (number of hair per square centimetre) and hair thickness (diameter) achieved by the group participants.

In the first group that was allowed the use of only non surgical treatment therapy, the researchers observed good hair density and hair thickness. The second group of participants also showed good results in the two parameters,

However, the third group of participants exhibited excellent results in terms of both hair density and hair thickness when compared to the other two groups.

“This study clearly shows that use of Minoxidil and non surgical treatment therapy simultaneously gives the best results for hair growth, hair density and hair thickness,” explained Dr John Watts, while urging viewers to share the video among their friends for awareness
