How Soon Can You Get a Hair Dye After a Hair Transplant?

How sooner can you get a hair dye after a hair transplant? Can you dye your hair immediately after a hair transplant? Is hair dye good for hair? Can it damage your transplanted hair?

These are some basic queries regarding hair dye post hair transplant that are demystified by Dr John Watts – noted dermatologist, trichologist and one of the Best Hair Transplant Surgeons in Hyderabad – in this educational video.

The Need for Hair Dye:

In his introductory note, Dr John Watts explains how and why the need may arise for one to dye his/her hair after a hair transplant.

“This usually happens that the donor hair that is extracted for transplant is already greying or white. Even if they are black at the time of transplant, they may eventually turn grey due to various factors. Hence, one option could be to go for hair dye after hair transplant,” explains Dr John Watts.

There is no way one can avoid this problem as one cannot be too selective about only transplanting black hair for transplant as it would be scientific and one’s hair may attract unnecessary looks for its oddity.

“We cannot extract hair in patches selectively and transplant it. We have to uniformly harvest donor hair to make it look natural. In such a scenario, the only way to camouflage one’s white hair is to go for hair dye after the transplant procedure,” adds Dr John.

Ideal Time for Hair Dye:

This, however, does not allow one to immediately go for a hair dye after a hair transplant as one may have to wait for up to six months.

“Since hair dyes are made of harmful chemicals like Paraphenylenediamine, ammonia and peroxides, they have inflammatory properties that can harm the transplanted hair if one uses hair dye immediately after a hair transplant,” explains Dr John Watts.

In case, one does not follow the ideal wait time and opts to dye one’s hair after a transplant immediately, it may create a low-level inflammatory response and the growing baby hair may get damaged in the process.

Alternative Hair Dye:

Using herbal-based Henna hair dye can be an alternative to the chemical hair dye as they have the least side effects.

“I always recommend herbal-based hair dye as an alternative,” informed Dr John Watts, while urging viewers to share the video among their friends for awareness.
